| Tobermory, On, The Chi-Cheemaun | Sept 05, 2005 |
|
We end this summer's trip with a Sunset Cruise on the Chi-Cheemaun. We would highly recommend this. The price was decent (meal and cruise from Tobermory to Manitoulin & back.) The meal was decent (not spectacular). But the Sunset was spectacular. I highly recommend taking your shots up on deck on the way to Mantoulin. We took them from inside and regret that. But no worries - we are Going back next year and shooting this again. But this time its with the new Canon Eos 20D! Starting the evening was some fun provided by a couple of teenagers - they decided to try to jump a "ramp" made of a doormat into Little Tub Harbour - needless to say the bike hit the edge of the dock and nose dived in.. Hilarious. Check it out!
| Tobermory, On, Singing Sands - Dorcas Bay | Sept 05, 2005 |
|
This is a phenomenal beach on Dorcas Bay. You can walk for 5 min and still be on a sand bar. Its incredible. Its call Singing Sands because there is a constant wind that seems to sing across the sands. (Singing Sands is on the Lake Huron side)
| Tobermory, On, The Chi-Cheemaun | Sept 04, 2005 |
|
This is the launching of
the world Famous Chi-Cheemaun. We photographed it Docking, opening the
ferry bay bow, loading the vehicles, then closing & departing. Its
an amazing ship. Fun Facts, as described by Ontario Northland, the $12
million Chi-Cheemaun is the "largest, most modern vessel ever built for
ferry service on the Great Lakes." It features drive-on, drive-off bow
and stern loading and unloading through a visored bow system and a
square door stern section. The ship is 365 feet long with a 62 foot beam
and has capacity for 638 passengers and 113 vehicles, including room for
17 highway vehicles such as buses and transport trucks. The ship is
powered by two Ruston 3500 horse power diesel engines and an 800 horse
power "bow thruster" engine which improves the handling of the vessel at
slow speeds. The addition of two mezzanine decks in 1982 increased the
ship's vehicle carrying capacity to 143. Ontario

| Tobermory, On, Flowerpot Island | Sept 04, 2005 |
|
During this visit to Tobermory we hiked Flowerpot Island. I fantastic hike that I would recommend you reserve a half day at least for (you can hike it faster than that but its more fun to take your time and see the sights.) We completed the path to the Light house and back - there are 3 other paths to complete. We used Blue Heron Boat tours to get there.
| Tobermory, On, The Grotto & Cypress Lake | Sept 03, 2005 |
|
We were told by friends - If you go to Tobermory don't go without hiking to the Grotto. Boy, we they right! Its a breathtaking view... its about short hike (around an hour) but that's by Cypress Lake (there's more than one way in). That lake is beautiful and the trail follows it right around. You think your at a dead end, you peak through the trees and your 4 stories above Georgian Bay with a breathtaking view. Many people dive off the cliffs (which is highly illegal and dangerous due to the rocks in the water.) Plus there are caves and crevices you can climb through if your skinny.

| Quinte Isle, On | Aug 19-22 2005 |
|
This is our 2nd trip to this park. It has 5 stars by Woodall's for both recreational and facility, and deserves them. Last year (May 2004) we forgot to take any pictures, but then a hurricane also passed just south of us so we were a little preoccupied with the winds and rains... This year it was de ja vu -- a tornado hit southern Ontario.. again all we got - thank goodness - was the rains and winds...but this time we were prepared so no worries. We highly recommend visiting this region - in May its Lilac time and the main roads are just miles and miles of lilacs - beautiful. There is Schroeder's market at hwy 1 & hwy 62 - baked goods, fruits & veggies, a small restaurant and the BEST dill pickles you have ever eaten (we came home with a case!). Then there is Bloomington -- a circa 1700 loyalist town full of antique shops etc. The park is Quinte Isle Park - right near the famous Sandbanks. They have waterfront (no service) campsites, pull thru's, and larger camping areas. All are well kept and the park is always very quiet.
| Selkirk, On, provincial park on lake Erie | Aug 06, 2005 | To Be Continued |
A beautiful provincial park on the shores of Lake Erie, Ontario. This small park is extremely quiet - with large sites and seasonal residents (unusual for a provincial park). Patrols every hour all night keep it quiet as intended. The view over Lake Erie is breathtaking. High grasses around each site allow the natural sounds of crickets, grasshoppers, and the sights of finches, sparrows, monarchs and several kinds of beautiful moths and butterflies. Selkirk Provincial Park - site 67.

| Cottonwood Mansion, Selkirk on & Port Dover, On | Aug 05, 2005 | To Be Continued |
Cottonwood mansion is a 6000 square foot home that was left vacant for 80 years! The tour takes about 40 minutes - covering local history and the families who lived there. Lovingly restored with donated period furniture and objects; the house is a must see. Regional Road 53 - #740, Selkirk, On.

Once again, we find ourselves at our good friends cottage - this time for an eventful hike leading up a steep waterfall to a magnificent view across the entire river and cottage area. Hike takes about 30 minutes thru rough bush and bogs, but the waterfall & vista view are well worth it.

Rockwood Conservation Area, Ont. A park run by the Grand River Conservation Authority - very similar to provincial parks - the same natural feeling but run by a much small municipal group. Sites are large. Many large groups camping however, so sometimes the area is noisy. There is a beautiful hiking path that leads you to a an old mill - circa 1800. When we arrived there was a medieval festival wrapping up. The hike takes you past the natural caves, and 'potholes'. A sure visit if you like to canoe or kayak - as the grand river is an amazing river to do so on.

| Burk's Falls, Magnetawan River, On | July 05, 2005 |
|
Yet again we are in Burk's Falls, On. This trip we filmed our entire boat trip from the cottage to the local Lake (Doe Lake I believe). This pictures are stills from our new Panasonic GS400. In this series you can see the large rock we hiked up to in the next trip (July 31, 2005), this is the same rock we were standing on when we took the vista view shots of the entire area. A close up of the rock is here (from last July)

This is my first visit to Tobermory since I was very young. Even so I remember it from my childhood - the beautiful images of flowerpot island and the harbour burn themselves in to your memory. Once you visit you want to keep coming back. Many have visited & returned to move there permanently. This time we took 2 hour glass bottom boat cruise over the shipwrecks and around the islands. A trip we highly recommend - breathtaking scenery - I actually ran out of space on my digicam cards - took nearly 180 photos in 2 hrs!

Bowmanville Zoo. Canada's oldest privately owned zoo (established 1919). The zoo is famous for its trained lions, tigers, & elephants. They have a show of this each day, and elephant rides. Famous animals include: Baghera, the magnificent black jaguar from Peter Benchley's Amazon, A bevy of camels from The Thirteenth Warrior starring Antonio Banderas, Billy, the white bengal tiger from the TV series Animorphs & the famous lion Caesar (unfortunately passed away but his offspring is there) was from many blockbuster movies was raised and trained here ("Ghost & the Darkness" would be the most famous movie he was in). A family run zoo - this is a wonderful place to visit with shade trees throughout so you can take your time.

Kirkland Lake, north of North Bay & Charlton, On. We visited Rose Point Lodge. A small park with a small lake in the middle. Our site was originally a seasonal site (vacant) that overlooked the lake and came with a lovely deck also. It was beautiful view in the morning.

Niagara Falls, we try to make this an annual trip -- in fact we honeymooned there in 2000. Both my husband & I grew up visiting the falls regularly in all seasons. They are always breathtaking. Recently, Niagara Falls has added attractions like the Butterfly Aviary, Bird Aviary, and Rain Forest Cafe. Of course, my husband's parents came with us as they love the falls also.

Henry Ford Museum of Innovation, Deerfield, Mi. Henry Ford himself built this museum - ahead of its time. People thought he was crazy as he was saving items that then were commonplace and just 'old'. But we know now that the items he preserved, and the museum he began is one of the best in the country of our last 200 years (in my opinion). The museum - unlike what you would think - is not dedicated to Ford cars (although there are some :) ), but all innovations, regardless of manufacturer, or inventor. The cars represent every facet of car invention, and every manufacturer in an unbiased view of auto history. Also, covered are trains, planes, large factory equipment, generators, computers and household inventions. There is even a full size house inside! A must see - we will be returning again as the exhibits change. Plan at least 3 days for the inside museum.

| Monroe Michigan, Shady Creek RV Park | July, 2004 |
|
Normally, we don't post pictures of derelict RV parks - but in this case this park was so grossly over advertised & NOTHING like the brochure / website we feel its in everyone's best interest. Situated between a well used freight train railway & 2 airports - would not advise visiting here. We basically hadno sleep between the planes, trains & bulldozers. Oh, did we mention they were bulldozing too! At Highpoint of the summer season. In fact, the day we were supposed to leave (and they knew this as we pre-booked et all) they bulldozed a 7ft high pile of gravel into the road in front of our trailer.. now that was fun maneuvering it out (not). They had advertised a central pavilion for all to use - but neglected to mention that there were some season visitors that had basically MOVED into it - TV and all! (it was not an enclosed pavilion - just an roof & pillars). There was bare wires at all the taps (winterizing?), rusted fallen swing sets, and fallen electrical pole (transformers intact) all over. We thought well maybe this year they are renovating but after chatting with a few people who had been in previous years found it it has been in that state for at least 5 years! At least our site was large & by the "water"

Bancroft Tent & Trailer Park... otherwise known as Bernie's. Our hosts are very nice, the park is small but nice. We had a lovely site at the top of a plateau. The park owners family cat came up to visit us several times a day. Bancroft is the Amethyst capitol of Canada.

This is our first trip with our new Rockwood Roo. A beautiful park which we unfortunately will not be visiting again (due the a theft of over 600.00 worth of equipment from our site during annual Guys camping later this summer). OPP and the park staff we not legally allowed to search the site where we knew our stuff was taken since none of it was visible, we lost coolers, chairs, and a large LOCKED trunk of tools - all under our awning with a light shining. It would have taken several people to remove the items. The site in question had several families and teens - the parents were just as loud as the teens. Most parks would have kicked them out earlier - had this the staff at this park done so we would still have our items. None the less - the park itself is beautiful and clean. The lake is also clean. Its close to Lindsay, the local drive in and Peterborough for sightseeing. Plus there is a osprey habitat program in place there. We used to tent camp here for quite a while before we bought the trailer.
